Pavement Licker Issue 13

NATURALLY & ARTIFICIALLY FLAVOURED

Here’s issue 13. It had been a bit of a break between the last one so we weren’t sure if we could remember how to make a Zine. Turns out that we totally could. This one’s got a bit of a dystopian theme - not much of a surprise when we’ve all lived through the past few years.

It features work by Nettie Wakefield, Daniel David Freeman, Jesse Lirola, Robert LeBlanc, Alex May Hughes, Christoffer Rudquist, Jack Hirons, Rob McNally, John Isaac, Seana Gavin, Lm Kemp, Babak Ganjei, Matt Hass and many more.

This was printed by the excellent Lloyd at the equally excellent PurePrint and is probably the best print quality yet. It also turns out that this coming out in 2023 marks 20 years since we started Pavement Licker. Which is quite ridiculous, and also shows how much we can procrastinate when we put our minds to it. Happy anniversary! Thank you to everyone who’s contributed to this one and the rest.

We were glad to find out that the printer had an Alan that was pandemic-proof and still working on his big photocopier. We're not joking. There was yet another Alan doing this one. Josh and James had to open their boxes over Zoom and didn't get to go to the pub to celebrate. But they will. Oh, they will.

Fully content with our Alan in Watford who’s printed the last three issues excellently, Pavement Licker 11 sat in unopened boxes for a week because, like excited schoolboys, James and Josh have this thing where they always open the boxes together.

As I Faced The Nothingness

Featuring Brook Power, Jamie Hewlett, Esme Puke, Mr Bingo, GILF, Anthony Lister, Shepard Fairey, Charlotte Jansen, Aldo Lugo, Glyn Duffy, Simon Davies, H.Y.T. Studio, Jim Matthews, Paul Camo, Rugman, The Real Dill, Andrew Rae and Lexie Smith.

The same artist as in Issue 9 appears in this one as Anonymous too. And there’s another Anonymous but that was a writer who wrote a true story and didn’t want his wife to read it and get in trouble. There are two anonymouses (anonymice?) in this one. We didn’t print enough of these and they sold out so we had to get more done such was the demand. Which was nice.

Unfortunately Alan and his printing company felt the pinch of the recession and weren’t around to do this issue and had to find someone new. We printed far too many of these - they are literally coming out of our ears. Please do take one if you want. A really, really, really famous - probably the most famous artist in the world contributed to this one and then at the last minute asked if we could put their name as Anonymous in the contributors list. Why not play a fun game of guessing who that person is.

We stuck with the previous Alan for the printing of this one as he did an excellent job. We also held a launch party on the hottest day of the year in a basement gallery on Leonard St and EVERYBODY got so hot their make up slid off.

You won’t believe this but this was printed by a different person who was also called Alan. We’d gone back to 120gsm uncoated paper here.

This was printed by a friendly guy called Alan (different one to before) he said he’d added a ‘bit extra’ to them for free, which sounded cool but the extra was he’d printed the cover on 400gsm card, which has always made this issue kinda weird to read.

From The Kicks To The Whips

Contributors for this one included Antony Micallef, Arofish, Dan Hillier, David Shrigley, Dolly Demoratti, Jeremyville, Ian Stevenson, John Slade, Joe Doran, Kelsey Brookes, Matthew Green, Andrew Rae, Paul Insect, Paul Sethi, Pure Evil and Mysterious Al.

This was weird one. A friend worked in the repro dept at the HSBC headquarters and stayed late to print a load off for us and when we picked them up he’d shrunk all the artwork by 25%. So Josh took them to Bestival and gave them out for free. Then we had to wait a while and get them printed at the proper size. We’re sure HSBC never noticed the paper stock going down.

Lucky Dip Or Lucky Trip

A collaboration with We Are… Collective, this featured work from Antony Micallef, Kelsey Brookes, David Shrigley, Vanessa Lam, Ian Stevenson, Holly Wales, John Slade, Andy Welland, Andrew Rae, Matthew Green, Tim Rasbash and Andrew James Jones. 

We had a proper launch night with this one at Notting Hill Arts Club. For some reason it’s printed on a silk paper.

Value For Money

This one features work from (deep breath) Banksy, David Shrigley, Jamie Hewlett, Andrew Rae, Matthew Green, Kelsey Brookes, EINE, Vanessa Lam, Naughty James, Jon Burgerman, ORKO, Erica Donovan, DP, Dave Chase and Paul Camo.

This one was printed by a proper printer in some arches under London Bridge. He was probably called Alan. Most printers seem to be.

This one was photocopied in the offices of a large, multinational company who did not know we had nicked a pass card and nipped in there on a Sunday and stayed until the toner ran out on three different floors.

This was drunkenly photocopied and stapled in a hot windowless room when the bosses had gone home.
